Valentine’s Day is just around the corner...

It’s hard to believe that it’s nearly Valentine’s Day already and whether you’re all loved up or single and ready to mingle, it’s the perfect time to treat yourself to some choccies and wine.

Before we share with you details on how you can enter a competition with the perfect date night prize, we’ll do a whistle stop tour of how and why we celebrate the day.

Where does Valentine’s Day come from?

It’s not always been about roses and chocolates. Valentine’s Day holds its origins from the Roman festival, Lupercalia which celebrated the early coming of Spring and fertility. At the end of the 5th Century this became known as St Valentine’s Day, after a martyred priest named Valentine.

The first formal messages or ‘valentines’ started appearing in the 1500s and by 1700s commercially printed cards were being exchanged. Images commonly depicted Cupid, the Roman God of Love as well as love hearts and birds.

Three facts you might not know about the day

1) Nearly 6 million couples get engaged on Valentine’s Day. It might seem cliched but it’s still the most popular day to pop the question, according to research.

2) The first heart-shaped box of chocolates was introduced in 1861. Created by Cadburys the first heart-shaped box went on sale for V-day in 1861. Today more than 36m heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold each year.

3) In Japan only women buy gifts on Valentine’s Day. Due to a translation error made by a chocolate company in 1936, when the day was first introduced to Japan, it’s traditional for single women to reveal who they fancy by giving them a small chocolate gift.
